Add an Auto Warranty to Your Winterizing Preparations

Rated 4.0. Votes: 2

auto warrantySometimes called an "extended warranty", a service contract is a promise to perform (or pay for) certain repairs or services. Although technically not a “warranty” as defined by federal law, service contracts may be arranged at any time and always costs extra. Warranties, on the other hand, ONLY come with a new car and are included in the original price. Vehicle service contracts are popularly referred to as "extended auto warranties" or "extended warranties". Use of the term "extended warranty" or "warranty" on this site is intended to refer to vehicle service contracts and not manufacturer's warranties.

Power lines freezing and breaking. Tree limbs cracking and falling. Objects freezing solid. These are typical of how winter affects the environment. Can you imagine what it does to your car? An expensive repair bill due to winter's frosty bite can put most anyone's budget into a deep freeze. An extended car warranty may be the perfect addition to your winterizing preparations.

"Looks like it's going to be a cold one this year," and that cliché is normally right. Last year, the Northeast US was blanketed with multiple feet of snow, and ice storms across the US abounded. Still, there are places to be, and we need our vehicles to get to them. But if the cold is stressful to us, it's even more stressful to the electronics, metal, and fittings that make-up an automobile. As most people know, if even the slightest problem occurs, it will shockingly expensive to repair. To protect themselves from unpleasant surprise repair bills, drivers are turning to extended auto warranties for some welcome security.

Having a comprehensive car warranty means not needing to worry about having to pay out of pocket for an expensive vehicle repair. Instead, other than a small deductible, the repair cost will be picked up by the auto warranty company. Naturally drivers will appreciate their auto warranties for a $400 or $500 repair. But these days, those are the low ends of cost. A transmission can easily be $3000, an ECM (electronic control module - the car's "brains") $1500, and engine failure $3500 and up.

As people are keeping their vehicles longer - the average age of vehicles on the road now is 9 years - the risk of a major mechanical failure is dramatically increased. A driver may escape a major repair - but probably not a small one - if he or she only keeps the vehicle for 2-3 years. But the repair records of an average repair facility show that the typical car or truck in for expensive repairs is about 5 years old.

Investing in a car warranty can help to ensure that your winter is relatively stress-free. If there is a repair needed, most plans include no-charge towing, rental, and roadside assistance.

Brokers of auto warranties like AA Auto Protection specialize in offering multiple plans for vehicles of different mileages and ages. Many drivers are not aware that their vehicle is eligible for coverage. In fact, there are plans available for most cars and trucks under 10 years old and under 150,000.

It's possible that the only vehicle that may not benefit from extended warranty coverage is Santa's Sleigh, but even there, it's aging fast.
