Reporters test drive Chevy Volt

Rated 4.0. Votes: 3

Chevy VoltSometimes called an "extended warranty", a service contract is a promise to perform (or pay for) certain repairs or services. Although technically not a “warranty” as defined by federal law, service contracts may be arranged at any time and always costs extra. Warranties, on the other hand, ONLY come with a new car and are included in the original price. Vehicle service contracts are popularly referred to as "extended auto warranties" or "extended warranties". Use of the term "extended warranty" or "warranty" on this site is intended to refer to vehicle service contracts and not manufacturer's warranties.

The Chevy Volt, which will be the first true electric vehicle to be mass-produced, was recently previewed to a few select reporters. Consumers who are anticipating the vehicle should consider purchasing a bumper-to-bumper warranty alongside it.

The Volt has been in pre-production for years, but the full features of the car have been under wraps until now. The vehicle contains both an electric motor that's good for 40 miles on full charge, as well as 1.4 liter gas engine for longer journeys, according to CNET.

The presence of the gas engine has drawn comparison to hybrid cars, such as Toyota's Prius. But because it's not connected to the driveshaft, Chevy calls the car "extended range electric vehicle." When not in use, the engine functions as a generator, helping to power the electric motor.

Electric cars are more complex, expensive, and prone to breakdown. Consumers can save money by purchasing an extended warranty, which will protect them should the car break down.

Since electric vehicles have not yet been fully adopted, their parts are not widely available, making repairs extra costly.

The Volt could be a game-changer. But consumers should protect their investment with an auto warranty from AA Auto Protection.ADNFCR-2896-ID-19791001-ADNFCR
