Washington cracking down on faulty automakers, auto warranties recommended to alleviate repair costs

Rated 4.9. Votes: 30

Washington impacts auto warranty salesSometimes called an "extended warranty", a service contract is a promise to perform (or pay for) certain repairs or services. Although technically not a “warranty” as defined by federal law, service contracts may be arranged at any time and always costs extra. Warranties, on the other hand, ONLY come with a new car and are included in the original price. Vehicle service contracts are popularly referred to as "extended auto warranties" or "extended warranties". Use of the term "extended warranty" or "warranty" on this site is intended to refer to vehicle service contracts and not manufacturer's warranties.

In the wake of massive recalls by Toyota and other car companies, Congress is calling for new federal regulations that will improve auto safety.

As the safety and overall quality of vehicles continues to be called into question, consumers are advised to purchase an extended warranty in order to protect themselves against the costs of the repair shop.

A House committee investigating Toyota's widely-reported accelerator recall released a new draft of a bill that would allow the government to impose harsher penalties on companies that manufacture faulty vehicles.

It also provides for the installation of "black boxes" in all automobiles, which will record performance data.

While defects in new cars are covered by a recall, the shoddy engineering can really hurt a used car owner, who has no dealer warranty or recall to fall back on. Bumper-to-bumper warranties provide coverage in case a part does break down due to wear and tear.

The bill, if adopted, will also provide funds for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to regulate automakers' manufacturing standards.ADNFCR-2896-ID-19754839-ADNFCR
