Types of Auto Warranties

There are several types of auto warranties, three of which are basic, powertrain and roadside assistance.

A basic auto warranty usually covers everything on the vehicle with the exception of those items which are subject to wear and tear. Examples of items not covered are oil filters, wiper blades and tires (most which have their own warranty).

Powertrain (also called drivetrain) warranties cover most major components of a vehicle such as the engine, transmission, drive axles and driveshaft. Like the basic auto warranty, parts subject to wear and tear such as hoses and belts are not covered, with the exception of most internal parts of the engine such as pistons and bearings.

The exact parts covered in any warranty will be stated in the contract.

Strictly speaking, Roadside Assistance is not a warranty but it is typically part of quality service plans. It provides which provides welcome help in the event you run out of gas, have a flat tire, or even locked yourself out of your vehicle.
