Lemons Can Be Avoided with Purchase of Auto Warranty

LemonDebbie Cole of Greenville, South Carolina, probably wishes she had purchased an auto warranty on the used car she recently bought from a dealer. After just a month, the car completely broke down on her.

Six months later, she’s still trying to get her money back from the dealer. Everybody knows to beware the “lemon,” a used car that probably costs less to buy than it will to repair if it breaks down later. But sometimes dealer’s can hide the problems a car has, according to 7 News in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

As part of their “Consumer Watch” segment, they took a $2,600 used car to a mechanic to check out what the dealer wasn’t telling them. The mechanic found problems with the airbag and transmission. Depending on what’s ultimately wrong with the transmission, the two repairs could total close to $4,000.

If you’re in the market for a used car, you might find yourself in the repair shop just a month later, like Cole. But a bumper-to-bumper warranty plan will keep you covered if the car breaks down later on.

Buying a car is a big investment, even if you’re searching on the low-end. An auto warranty protects your investment, and protects you from ending up with a lemon on your hands.

I always preferred to bring a mechanic friend of mine whenever I needed to invest little money on a new car. I even once paid a mechanic to go with me to the dealer after I had selected a few possible cars. $50-100 outweighs thousands later on.
